SMOKER FIGHT 2010

by: Kim "BKK" Velasco
& viper

Smoker fights have been around for a long time already, but not a lot of people know much about them. Some even jokingly guessed that smoker fights are fights held between smokers. Silly, but is an indication on how much people actually know about them.

Fighters’ clashing in a gladiator-like throwdown in basements or social clubs is the concept or idea that I had in my head when somebody explained the idea of a smoker fight to me. Smoker fights are a great way for amateur fighters to actually compete and fight against another fighter, usually from another gym or dojo, as these types of events offer them a way to actually experience an actual match in a more toned down level of competition. Though on paper, smoker fights appears to be simply a class higher than sparring, they still offer a lot of the same excitement, danger, and experience that an actual fight would.

Just recently, 2nd of May, 2010, EDGE MMA held their very first smoker fight for all their students at Holiday Gym and Spa Muay Thai and Body Bar Gym, ITF at Dover. The smoker fight was held at Almendras Gym, in the same ring and gym where actual boxers here in Davao City train in, and it was definitely an experience that everyone involved would definitely not forget.

As I entered the gym, the atmosphere of the place was exactly like that of an underground fight. It was hot, humid, and revved up with a lot of testosterone and aggression coming from both fighters and the audiences. This, however, did not stop the fighter’s family and friends to come and watch the event. There were even some children present during the event, a sight you don’t normally expect to see in a smoker fight, at least I didn’t expect it. Nonetheless, everyone seemed ready and eager to see some punches and kicks fly.. and the punches and kicks did fly!

There were three fights scheduled for the first ever smoker fight held by EDGE MMA, pitting three students from Holiday Gym and Spa against three students from Body Bar, both classes handled by Ryan Cordero, under the tutelage of Dr.Vincent Vicente.

The first fight was between Karl Jude Lumanog and Ramil . Both fighters appeared ready to fight, and were raring to go. Once the match started, both fighters were a bit hesitant at first, not really throwing any solid punch or kick, but after the first few punches landed, Ramil from Body Bar began to find his comfort zone, and began unleashing a flurry of punches upstairs to Karl, some of the more devastating punches came from the clinch. Karl appeared shaken by the punches, but stood in the ring and fought to the best of his abilities. Ultimately, Ramil came out as the victor in their match.

The second fight was more grueling as compared to the first one, as it lasted the whole three rounds with toe to toe, none ending blows. Ian Cordova was pitted against Emilfredo Francisco. The first round was a strong round for Emil as he floored Ian with a straight punch to the chin. Ian showed no signs of fear as he stood up and bounced back. At the second round Ian threw several combinations that got Emil's attention. The fight appeared to shift advantage between fighters as they continued to exchange punches and solid kicks. At the third round, both fighters began to unleash all kinds of different punches and kicks, some of which can be associated to blows thrown during a brawl. On this final round on the later minutes, Ian showed heart and will as he threw a barrage of combinations to Emil prompting Emil to drawback and just played defensively. In the end, it was a decision by the judge to declare the fights as a draw, as both fighters have given their best by showing both heart and skills.

The last fight was probably the highlight of the entire smoker fight, as it was in this fight that the first and only knockout of the afternoon occurred. The fight was between Paolo Mabanglo of Holiday Gym and Spa, and Lemmy Guttierez of Body Bar. Paolo appeared more nervous at the start of the match compared to Lem. Lemmy's antics probably added to the tension and nervousness that Paolo might have experienced. Nonetheless, both fighters came out swinging. They both threw kicks, and landed punches, but one kick in particular proved to be the one to end the match. As Paolo was backpedaling with his guard relaxed, Lemmy saw an opening and tried throwing a high round house kick which landed on the right chin followed up by a cross, knocking Paolo out. The fighters were separated and Paolo was given some time to recuperate, but the match was decided. Lemmy won via knockout 43 seconds of the first round.

At the end of the day, pseudo fighters became real fighters. They already know what fighting in the ring was all about and they came out as better and stronger individuals. Equip with the first hand, first time ring experience they will grow and progress as true warriors.

A Post Fight Party came after and was held at Bak Bak Pryce where the students, fighters of both gyms hang out and had fun. A surprise number was given by some EDGE MMA members. It was a fun night where people get to know each other and truly became friends as, opponents at the ring became good buddies.

All in all, EDGE MMA’s first ever kick boxing smoker fight proved to be a success, and is hopefully just a beginning of many more smoker fights to come. We need more and more of these types of events to help Davao’s fighters to become more experienced in fighting, and ultimately, help them develop into better and more menacing fighters in the future.

Kudos!!

Thanks to the EDGE MMA team who were there to support, facilitate and make it possible...
Ryan Cordero the referee , Sid Cayon (cornerman, coach), Kim Milana(cornerman, coach), Richard Gallogo(cornerman, coach) and special thanks to Isaac Tuling who graced the event as the Judge.

Thanks also to the boxers of Alemendras gym who allowed us to use the gym on this ground breaking event.

Steve Sur Grandeza Competes on 5-21-2010

Good day to you. we have learned that you have an upcoming fight. Can I have a short interview with you and with your permission I will post it in my blog? Thanks

Steve Sur Grandeza:
Sure...It's my pleasure.. Thank you.....

MMA Davao: Can you tell us the details of this fight? (Where, When, Who are you going to fight)

Steve Sur Grandeza:
The Fight will be on MAY 21, 2010 @ THE CHI LODGE DUBAI...
I will be fighting against George "The Titanium" Micouris
The Top Contender. Initially, I was going to fight against the World Champion named Najmeddin "Scorpion" Al Haddah ( Canadian Lebanese) who is a K1 Grand Prix Champion and WKBF Champion. I will be the challenger of his WBKF Title. This fight was supposed to happen with the Fight of Boom2x Bautista and the rest of the Filipino Boxers in The Filipino vs Rest of the World last April 23 in the same venue-The Chi Lodge Duabi aired by ABS CBN ... However, the KO Promotions Dubai informed me 2 weeks before the fight that the Champion refused to fight. Henceforth, I was informed that the WKBF Belt might be stripped off from him.. Thus, another fighter shall be placed and maybe we will be fighting for the belt....

MMA Davao: For our readers can you give us a backgrounder about you and your discipline and for how long you have been doing this?

Steve Sur Grandeza:I have been practicing the art of Moo Duk kwan Soo Bahk Do Tang Soo Do... a korean martial art for 28 years and 4th degree blackbelt... My instructor is my father Master Edgardo 'Bing" Grandeza and the person who brought Moo DuK Kwan in the Philippines was my Grandfather Master Casimiro "Chingi" Grandeza. He was trained by the Grandmaster of MDK in Korea in the early 60's. The Grandeza Family has been propagating Martial Arts in the City and the Country since 1950's. My uncles are all blackbelts and Instructors as well as my Mother, brother and sister.

MMA davao: How was your transition from doing your traditional martial arts to competing on another discipline?

Steve Sur Grandeza:
Actually, the transition is not that difficult primarily because Moo Duk Kwan system in the 50's -90's focused mainly on street fighting techniques to include combat judo, jujitsu, aikido and boxing which was the style made famous by my Grandfather ( and his group called the White Kimono Club) and this was the reason why he was invited by the Grandmaster in Korea. He learned from different Top Japanese , Chinese and Korean masters during his time. With the foundation, the flexibility to adapt to other types of competition would not to be too hard but I can say that the preparation would be and should be a notch higher to physically, internally, mentally and spiritually prepare oneself.

MMA Davao: how did you prepare for this upcoming fight?

Steve Sur Grandeza
Trained hard i should say.... 2 x or 3 times a day.... jog in the morning.... boxing in the afternoon with my trainer and boxing sparring partner RUDE 4K Kevkache ( a sparring partner of PACMAN, a Philippine Champion, WBC rated , PABA and ABC Contender ) and Evening training with my Coach Edgar Alan Paulino and Instructor Master Edgardo 'Bing" Grandeza..

MMA Davao: DO you know who you are fighting with, his background, or have you studied his moves?

Steve Sur Grandeza
Yes I have both studied their moves and studied the Strenghts, Weaknesses the possible opportunities and threats..

MMA Davao: In behalf of MMA Davao and its members, Local Martial artists we wish you the best and good luck on this Fight!
Represent !!!

Steve Sur Grandeza
Thank you so much. My deepest appreciation for your effort in Uniting and promoting Martial Arts in the City... as we all know that harmony is the purpose of the existence of Martial arts.... the be all and end all is the perfection of ones character... of course, with courtesy and discipline .... God Bless... This is for us....

Aldo vs Faber.....yup its Aldo

Articles from Sherdog and WEC

Sunday, April 25, 2010
by Brian Knapp (bknapp@sherdog.com)

In a measured and methodical performance, World Extreme Cagefighting featherweight champion Jose Aldo outlined his greatness in crystal clear detail.

Aldo dismissed former titleholder and promotional poster boy Urijah Faber in the WEC 48 “Aldo vs. Faber” headliner on Saturday at the Arco Arena in Sacramento, Calif., as he posted a unanimous decision victory in his first defense of the 145-pound crown. Scores were 49-45, 49-45 and 50-45.

The leg kick was Aldo’s weapon of choice, as he exacted an insurmountable toll on Faber’s base with a steady stream of strikes to his lower extremities. The Nova Uniao thoroughbred landed 10 low kicks in the second round alone, a majority of them to Faber’s lead left leg. At one point, Faber had to be carried back to his corner.

“I trained a lot of defense [for] those leg kicks, but he was very effective with them,” Faber said. “He really took away my legs, and it was impossible to get something going when he was attacking like that.”

On a 10-fight winning streak, Aldo nearly finished Faber in the fourth round, when he knocked down “The California Kid” with a leg kick, mounted him briefly and attached himself to the challenger’s back. Faber escaped, but when the action hit the floor again, Aldo trapped him in a topside crucifix for nearly two minutes, grinding on him with punches and elbows.

Taken the distance for the first time in nearly three years, Aldo seemed content to ride out the decision. Round five proved largely uneventful, save for a wicked right hook to the body that left Faber visibly shaken.

“Every time I would try to kick, he would switch his base and I was aware of that,” Aldo said. “So I didn’t want to go outside of my limits and get caught in something. … He has a very strong right cross and I wanted to pay attention to that. I just was waiting for the right time to try to finish.”

Aldo and Henderson Dominate, Retain Titles
Apr-25-2010

By Frank Curreri

SACRAMENTO – By the end of the third round, one of Urijah Faber’s cornermen carried the battered fighter to a stool. The hometown superstar could barely stand on his left leg, the unfortunate recipient of dozens of devastating kicks from former semi-pro soccer player Jose Aldo. The world featherweight champion from Brazil, who hasn’t lost in over four years, had ravaged his charismatic and courageous challenger with wicked kicks to the ribs and legs, and also repeatedly pounded The California Kid’s body with hard punches. Video: Watch post-fight interviews with all of the night's winners

On at least three occasions Aldo’s super-quick leg kicks – arguably the fastest in all of MMA – swept Faber off his feet and onto his rump. And for the better part of five rounds, an unscathed Aldo methodically punished Faber and left everyone wondering – not if Faber could magically end the fight – but if he would survive until the end. Once it became apparent that Aldo owned Faber on their feet – late in the second round -- Sacramento fans kept hoping Faber could score a takedown. Despite several diving efforts, he could not, as Aldo easily rebuffed the former Division I wrestler’s attempts.

“I trained to defend those leg kicks … but it was impossible to get something going when he’s attacking like that,” Faber would say later.

It was a breakout performance for the incredibly talented Aldo (17-1), who won the title in November by stopping Mike Thomas Brown and was competing for the first time on pay-per-view, in a main event no less. Basically everywhere the fight went, the champion shined. The Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt cracked Faber with a high kick and knocked his legs out from under him in round four, then trapped Faber in a beatdown position and rained down dozens of mini-punches and elbows. Fans briefly got excited when Faber escaped from Aldo’s back control and hunted in vain for a guillotine choke. To Faber’s credit, he came out very aggressive in the first round and took the fight to the champion – though despite his activity, few of Faber’s strikes landed. Faber (23-4) also showed uncommon valor when most fighters would have found a way out. There was no quit in Faber as he absorbed the carnage, which continued in round five when Aldo made him double over with a hard shot to the midsection.

Aldo conceded afterward that he played it a little bit safe in the later rounds because Faber continually switched to a southpaw stance to try and avoid further damage to his left leg.

“I didn’t want to go outside of my limits and do something I couldn’t because he has a very strong right cross and I didn’t want to get caught by that,” Aldo said.

In the end, judges awarded Aldo a unanimous decision by scores of 50-45, 49-45 and 49-45.

Faber, meanwhile, had to be helped from the cage by his trainers and seemed physically exhausted.

“I had limited mobility,” Faber said afterward, as if straining to talk. “He’s very good and very fast. It was a tough fight and I tried my best.”

In the night's co-headliner, WEC lightweight champion Benson Henderson proved his first win over Donald Cerrone was no fluke and quickly submitted the No. 1 contender for his first successful title defense.

For as long as Manny Gamburyan has been competing professionally, fans and fellow fighters have raved about his judo skills, explosive takedowns and freakish strength. But following his first-round destruction of former WEC featherweight champ Mike Brown, Gamburyan should now get some additional kudos for his striking.

In a featured lightweight attraction that pitted NCAA Division I wrestling All-American Shane Roller against prolific striker and fellow contender Anthony Njokuani, the ground fighter reigned supreme.

Over the past year, the WEC's bantamweight title has bounced from new champ to new champ. The entire time, Scott Jorgensen knew a single, close split-decision defeat to Antonio Banuelos back at WEC 41 likely cost him his shot at the belt.

Last UFC fight: Silva vs. Maia

MMA Davao Sent a multiple message to all its members and some famous mma figures regarding the last UFC fight. The Question was: Any comments about the Silva and Maia Fight?
What do you think about Anderson Silva's attitude during the fight?

And we received various Comments:

Rolit Cuenca
anderson could have finished mia in the first round, but he was not able to do so, why? probly because that he is to confident of his stand up, yeh yeh i give it to him, he is rearly good or really great at what he does, but man he plays around, clowns around to much, probly the reason he gassed out. what a waste of pay per view.

Daniel Elmore
BUM

Paolo Miguel Mabanglo hmm.. he got the "attitude".He wants action inside the octagon. Sliva is confident not cocky. However, his confidence is exaggerated.

Joachim Milana Silva got cocky in the fight, maybe that's his game plan or whatever. He was saying at the post-fight interview that Maia disrespected him, but i don't know, he should have showed some class inside the cage.

Ray Elbe
Thanx for the email :)
....Okay to answer your questions.
Anderson Silva is the UFC's most dominate striker. I find it amusing that the UFC continues to struggle to find competent opponents. Travis Lutter exposed weaknesses in the Spider's game, that Dan Henderson was unable to duplicate. The UFC has picked predominate grapplers with limited striking capabilities, or "brawlers" lacking the "technical" ability to compete against The Spider. I believe Chael Sonnen has the tools needed to deal with the Champion. As far as Anderson Silva's inability to finish--and his "showboating" antics, I really think it's just a case of loosing interest in the fight--and not wanting to engage "World Champion Grapplers" on the ground. Stand up and get KO'd like a man :)

magicalray.com .

Wictor Dahlström
I think that Silva won the fight without having to do much fighting. It might not be nice or respectful to showboat like that, but if it breaks your oponent mentaly, the why not? It is not like beating someone unconsious is very nice in the first place.

Malik Arash Mawlayi: Like a fighter i always liked Silva and his style kind of remind me of myself when i saw his fights. And thought he was a rally cool and calm fighter.

Demian has been to my Old gym and had seminars In Sweden couple of times and i also met him as a guest in Art Of War 12 in Bejing, such a kind person.

After that fight between them in UFC i really lost my respect for Andersson Silva. What more to say

Ole Baguio Laursen
Well, ok, he was a bit of smart ass, but...he is the defending champ that cant be dethrowned, I think smart ass attitude was to provoke Damian to throw down and give him a fight, fact is Anderson is levels above anyone that has been in with him.
people are saying, why didnt he go on the ground and finish Damian? fact is ,its mma, not a submission wrestling competition ,IF you were the undisputed several time champ, would you put yourself into Damian’s game and face loosing all you have earned?
would be foolish. silva is the greatest in the division but not unbeatable, someone will come along and give him a serious fight.

Mindanao Grappling Competition an interview with the Organizer

Last Sunday the 18th of April 2010, became the 4th Southern Philippines Brazilian Jujitsu Open and No-Gi Grappling Challenge. MMA Davao were able to interview the organizer of the event Mr. Mars Cenojas, who he himself is a practitioner an instructor of the sport and a gym owner.

In behalf of MMA Davao, Congratulations for the successful event!

MMA Davao: How does it feel that the event is finally over and it’s a success?

Mr. Mars Cenojas: STRESS-FREE AGAIN.......... and so much satisfied.

MMA Davao: How long did you plan for the event?

Mr. Mars Cenojas: The 3rd competition was last Jan. 31, 2010 then it took me again 3 mos. to prepare for the 4th event in BJJ and NO-GI.

MMA Davao:It was a well attended tourney; there were how many teams and how many players all in all?

Mr. Mars Cenojas: There were 9 teams (Cenojas MMA, Warrior BJJ, 2 Teams from CDO, Butuan Extreme MMA, Edge MMA, Kidapawan Grapplers, Star Bods Gym and Smashville Fitness Center) I think there were about almost 80 participants in both BJJ and NO-GI.

MMA Davao:I have seen that Mr. Kamphuis attended the event and at several occasions refereed …What was his role and how are you affiliated with him?
What do you hope to achieve by doing this event?

Mr. Mars Cenojas:I just want to propagate BJJ and Grappling here in Davao., By having official competitions that is recognized by the BJJ Federation Phils. and Asia in the person of Coach Stephen Kamphuis will help disseminate to the public about BJJ and Grappling. The Saint: I was careless then because i was thinking of finishing him only to realize he can still throw heavy punches but i am already focus in finishing him.

The Saint: I really don't know him that much but i found him nice even during the weigh in.

MMA DAVAO: How does it feel to have the belt?
