Martial Combat Champion - THE IRON FIST

Before anything else, in behalf of all the MMA fans, enthusiasts, practitioners here in Davao and members of MMA Davao FB group, CONGRATULATIONS!!!

OLE: whatup davao! whatup vincent,im good thanks, happy with all the hard work in the gym payd of and right now just enjoying my win

MMA DAVAO: Give us your thoughts about the fight?
OLE: 1st round plan was to stay out of reach and buy myself some time since i had just found out i was fighting 5 rounds.plan didnt work out and i was in a bit of trouble first round being taken down,he landed some good shots on me to,,2nd i came back landing heavy legkicks,in clinch i kept kneeing same thigh and had him grounded few times where i just stepped out to legkick him when he was down.they paid of and stopped his mobility on 3rd and i think his heart to,broke him down,,in 3rd managed to land again,at some point got chance to go for crusifix but ended up taking his back locking his arm down with one leg so he only had 1 arm to defend the choke with ,and i sunk it in.

MMA DAVAO: Do you have a specific game plan for your opponent?
OLE: plan was to stand and strike and tire him out ,,if possible i would end it standing,,if ended on ground like it did the dream end scenario would be submission and i got it.

MMA DAVAO: Any comments about your opponent?
OLE: he was strong, fast and skilled,,i think he mental broke and my poker face covered up the times that he had me hurt so he didnt take further advantage where he should have.
good fighter and seemed like a nice guy.

MMA DAVAO: During the fist round as he was giving your problems, what was on your mind? What went wrong?
OLE: usually takes me a round to figure out the distance and he hit me early and made his game work.2nd i started to figure him out.

MMA DAVAO: What were your thoughts when you were already at his back and controlling him, going for the RNC?
OLE: that i wasnt going to get it

MMA DAVAO: How does it feel to have the belt?
OLE: well, the belt is just a bonus glimmer thing that looks good on pictures,,im really happy for the win itself and that i was able to beat this guy,,my game keeps improving and i would like the world to know that we at my camp take our training serious

MMA DAVAO: How was the Post fight party? :)
OLE: haha,will tell you later!

The Dragon got slayed by the Shogun

UFC
By Thomas Gerbasi

Rua opened the fight with a kick to the legs and one of his patented flurries of punches. Machida fired back with a punch upstairs that got Rua’s attention, but the Curitiba native was clearly intent on pushing the action and keeping Machida on the defensive. It was Machida scoring the bout’s first takedown though, but neither man was able to take control on the mat, and the two stood. Again, Rua went after Machida aggressively, and Machida responded with a takedown, and after a stalemate on the mat, the fighters stood. Machida stood in the pocket with his dangerous foe, but after missing a left hand, Rua clipped the champion with a right hand that dropped him to the mat. It was then that one of the game’s great finishers showed his stuff once again as he went immediately into the mount position and fired off a crushing series of punches that forced referee Yves Lavigne to stop the fight at the 3:35 mark.

“When I connected with the overhand right, I already noticed that he was going out,” said Rua, whose finishing sequence. “Then I took the opportunity to punch him on the ground until the referee would stop the fight, but I actually stopped punching a little before the referee stopped the fight. But when we see that opportunity, we go in there for the kill because sometimes in the fight you only have that one opportunity.”

With the win, Rua improves to 19-4; Machida falls to 16-1.

This time, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua made sure the judges were not involved.

Rua knocked out the previously unbeaten Lyoto Machida 3:35 into the first round to capture the light heavyweight championship at UFC 113 “Machida vs. Shogun 2” on Saturday at the Bell Centre in Montreal. At 28, Rua again sits atop the 205-pound heap.

For many, it will be remembered as a night when justice was served. Machida took a controversial unanimous decision from Rua at UFC 104 in October. Shogun, who battered the Shotokan karate savant with kicks to the leg and body the first time the two met, waited seven months for his shot at redemption, and he made the most of it.

Rua ate some knees to the body and succumbed to a pair of takedowns early in round one. However, the 2005 Pride Fighting Championships middleweight grand prix winner dropped Machida with a right hand to the side of the head in a close-quarters stand-up exchange, followed him to the ground and moved immediately to mount on the dazed defending champion. A series of unanswered punches from the top left Machida limp, as Rua rose victoriously from his fallen foe, his arms raised skyward.

“Lyoto is a great fighter. He’s very good,” Rua said. “This time, instead of working and focusing so much on my kicks, I worked a lot on my hands so I could surprise him. I was happy with my new strategy.”

MMA JUNKIE
MONTREAL – His first shot at dethroning UFC light-heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida ended in a controversial decision loss and demands for an immediate rematch.

In his second attempt, Mauricio "Shogun" Rua left no doubt, picked up a first-round knockout victory, delivered Machida his first career defeat, and staked claim to the UFC's light-heavyweight title.

The championship fight headlined UFC 113, which took place Saturday at Montreal's soldout Bell Centre and aired on pay-per-view.

Machida and Rua first fought in October at UFC 104, where the well-matched 205-pounders went the full five rounds and left their fate in the hands of the judges, who disagreed with most fans (and even UFC president Dana White) and awarded the champ the unanimous-decision win.

After the rematch was delayed by injuries, Rua finally got his second shot and wasted little time taking the fight to Machida. Whereas the first meeting was a strategic affair with both competitors throwing kicks from distance, "Shogun" quickly let his hands fly in the rematch. He clipped Machida with the blows before the champ took the fight to the mat on two occasions. But Rua quickly escaped, and after the second restart, connected on a beautiful overhand right that sent Machida crashing to the mat.

Rua sensed the finish and quickly followed with nearly a dozen punches until referee Yves Lavigne called for the TKO stoppage at the 3:35 mark of the opening round.

"This time instead of working my kicks, I worked on my hands," Rua said. "It worked this time."

With the win, Rua (19-4 MMA, 3-2 UFC), a former PRIDE 205-pound grand-prix champion who initially struggled after his move to the UFC, has now won three of four fights. (The lone blemish was the controversial decision loss to Machida.)

SMOKER FIGHT 2010

by: Kim "BKK" Velasco
& viper

Smoker fights have been around for a long time already, but not a lot of people know much about them. Some even jokingly guessed that smoker fights are fights held between smokers. Silly, but is an indication on how much people actually know about them.

Fighters’ clashing in a gladiator-like throwdown in basements or social clubs is the concept or idea that I had in my head when somebody explained the idea of a smoker fight to me. Smoker fights are a great way for amateur fighters to actually compete and fight against another fighter, usually from another gym or dojo, as these types of events offer them a way to actually experience an actual match in a more toned down level of competition. Though on paper, smoker fights appears to be simply a class higher than sparring, they still offer a lot of the same excitement, danger, and experience that an actual fight would.

Just recently, 2nd of May, 2010, EDGE MMA held their very first smoker fight for all their students at Holiday Gym and Spa Muay Thai and Body Bar Gym, ITF at Dover. The smoker fight was held at Almendras Gym, in the same ring and gym where actual boxers here in Davao City train in, and it was definitely an experience that everyone involved would definitely not forget.

As I entered the gym, the atmosphere of the place was exactly like that of an underground fight. It was hot, humid, and revved up with a lot of testosterone and aggression coming from both fighters and the audiences. This, however, did not stop the fighter’s family and friends to come and watch the event. There were even some children present during the event, a sight you don’t normally expect to see in a smoker fight, at least I didn’t expect it. Nonetheless, everyone seemed ready and eager to see some punches and kicks fly.. and the punches and kicks did fly!

There were three fights scheduled for the first ever smoker fight held by EDGE MMA, pitting three students from Holiday Gym and Spa against three students from Body Bar, both classes handled by Ryan Cordero, under the tutelage of Dr.Vincent Vicente.

The first fight was between Karl Jude Lumanog and Ramil . Both fighters appeared ready to fight, and were raring to go. Once the match started, both fighters were a bit hesitant at first, not really throwing any solid punch or kick, but after the first few punches landed, Ramil from Body Bar began to find his comfort zone, and began unleashing a flurry of punches upstairs to Karl, some of the more devastating punches came from the clinch. Karl appeared shaken by the punches, but stood in the ring and fought to the best of his abilities. Ultimately, Ramil came out as the victor in their match.

The second fight was more grueling as compared to the first one, as it lasted the whole three rounds with toe to toe, none ending blows. Ian Cordova was pitted against Emilfredo Francisco. The first round was a strong round for Emil as he floored Ian with a straight punch to the chin. Ian showed no signs of fear as he stood up and bounced back. At the second round Ian threw several combinations that got Emil's attention. The fight appeared to shift advantage between fighters as they continued to exchange punches and solid kicks. At the third round, both fighters began to unleash all kinds of different punches and kicks, some of which can be associated to blows thrown during a brawl. On this final round on the later minutes, Ian showed heart and will as he threw a barrage of combinations to Emil prompting Emil to drawback and just played defensively. In the end, it was a decision by the judge to declare the fights as a draw, as both fighters have given their best by showing both heart and skills.

The last fight was probably the highlight of the entire smoker fight, as it was in this fight that the first and only knockout of the afternoon occurred. The fight was between Paolo Mabanglo of Holiday Gym and Spa, and Lemmy Guttierez of Body Bar. Paolo appeared more nervous at the start of the match compared to Lem. Lemmy's antics probably added to the tension and nervousness that Paolo might have experienced. Nonetheless, both fighters came out swinging. They both threw kicks, and landed punches, but one kick in particular proved to be the one to end the match. As Paolo was backpedaling with his guard relaxed, Lemmy saw an opening and tried throwing a high round house kick which landed on the right chin followed up by a cross, knocking Paolo out. The fighters were separated and Paolo was given some time to recuperate, but the match was decided. Lemmy won via knockout 43 seconds of the first round.

At the end of the day, pseudo fighters became real fighters. They already know what fighting in the ring was all about and they came out as better and stronger individuals. Equip with the first hand, first time ring experience they will grow and progress as true warriors.

A Post Fight Party came after and was held at Bak Bak Pryce where the students, fighters of both gyms hang out and had fun. A surprise number was given by some EDGE MMA members. It was a fun night where people get to know each other and truly became friends as, opponents at the ring became good buddies.

All in all, EDGE MMA’s first ever kick boxing smoker fight proved to be a success, and is hopefully just a beginning of many more smoker fights to come. We need more and more of these types of events to help Davao’s fighters to become more experienced in fighting, and ultimately, help them develop into better and more menacing fighters in the future.

Kudos!!

Thanks to the EDGE MMA team who were there to support, facilitate and make it possible...
Ryan Cordero the referee , Sid Cayon (cornerman, coach), Kim Milana(cornerman, coach), Richard Gallogo(cornerman, coach) and special thanks to Isaac Tuling who graced the event as the Judge.

Steve Sur Grandeza Competes on 5-21-2010

Good day to you. we have learned that you have an upcoming fight. Can I have a short interview with you and with your permission I will post it in my blog? Thanks

Steve Sur Grandeza:
Sure...It's my pleasure.. Thank you.....

MMA Davao: Can you tell us the details of this fight? (Where, When, Who are you going to fight)

Steve Sur Grandeza:
The Fight will be on MAY 21, 2010 @ THE CHI LODGE DUBAI...
I will be fighting against George "The Titanium" Micouris
The Top Contender. Initially, I was going to fight against the World Champion named Najmeddin "Scorpion" Al Haddah ( Canadian Lebanese) who is a K1 Grand Prix Champion and WKBF Champion. I will be the challenger of his WBKF Title. This fight was supposed to happen with the Fight of Boom2x Bautista and the rest of the Filipino Boxers in The Filipino vs Rest of the World last April 23 in the same venue-The Chi Lodge Duabi aired by ABS CBN ... However, the KO Promotions Dubai informed me 2 weeks before the fight that the Champion refused to fight. Henceforth, I was informed that the WKBF Belt might be stripped off from him.. Thus, another fighter shall be placed and maybe we will be fighting for the belt....

MMA Davao: For our readers can you give us a backgrounder about you and your discipline and for how long you have been doing this?

Steve Sur Grandeza:I have been practicing the art of Moo Duk kwan Soo Bahk Do Tang Soo Do... a korean martial art for 28 years and 4th degree blackbelt... My instructor is my father Master Edgardo 'Bing" Grandeza and the person who brought Moo DuK Kwan in the Philippines was my Grandfather Master Casimiro "Chingi" Grandeza. He was trained by the Grandmaster of MDK in Korea in the early 60's. The Grandeza Family has been propagating Martial Arts in the City and the Country since 1950's. My uncles are all blackbelts and Instructors as well as my Mother, brother and sister.

MMA davao: How was your transition from doing your traditional martial arts to competing on another discipline?

Steve Sur Grandeza:
Actually, the transition is not that difficult primarily because Moo Duk Kwan system in the 50's -90's focused mainly on street fighting techniques to include combat judo, jujitsu, aikido and boxing which was the style made famous by my Grandfather ( and his group called the White Kimono Club) and this was the reason why he was invited by the Grandmaster in Korea. He learned from different Top Japanese , Chinese and Korean masters during his time. With the foundation, the flexibility to adapt to other types of competition would not to be too hard but I can say that the preparation would be and should be a notch higher to physically, internally, mentally and spiritually prepare oneself.

MMA Davao: how did you prepare for this upcoming fight?

Steve Sur Grandeza
Trained hard i should say.... 2 x or 3 times a day.... jog in the morning.... boxing in the afternoon with my trainer and boxing sparring partner RUDE 4K Kevkache ( a sparring partner of PACMAN, a Philippine Champion, WBC rated , PABA and ABC Contender ) and Evening training with my Coach Edgar Alan Paulino and Instructor Master Edgardo 'Bing" Grandeza..

MMA Davao: DO you know who you are fighting with, his background, or have you studied his moves?

Steve Sur Grandeza
Yes I have both studied their moves and studied the Strenghts, Weaknesses the possible opportunities and threats..

MMA Davao: In behalf of MMA Davao and its members, Local Martial artists we wish you the best and good luck on this Fight!
Represent !!!

Steve Sur Grandeza
