Smoker Fight 4

DECEMBER 27, 2010
ALMENDRAS BOXING ARENA
DAVAO CITY PHILIPPINES

Smoker fights have been around for a long time already, but not a lot of people know much about them. Some even jokingly guessed that smoker fights are fights held between smokers. Silly, but is an indication on how much people actually know about them.

Fighters’ clashing in a gladiator-like throwdown in basements or social clubs is the concept or idea that other people might have in their head however, Smoker fights are a great way for amateur fighters to actually compete and fight against another fighter, usually from another gym or dojo, as these types of events offer them a way to actually experience an actual match in a more toned down level of competition.
This is a common event in the states where different fighters from different gyms would compete each other on a given venue. There are no set opponents, the pairing is done during the day of the event.It one of way of preparing fighters for bigger fight. Thru smoker fights, the fighter will slowly develop ring confidence and help them control their ring jitters. Though on paper, smoker fights appears to be simply a class higher than sparring, they still offer a lot of the same excitement, danger, and experience that an actual fight would.

XFC2 2010

Fighters would go anywhere, do anything and do everything just to have an opportunity to showcase their skills and to test themselves if they have what it takes to compete inside the ring. Last November 28, 2010 a team of 3 fighters from Davao competed at the second MMA event in Butuan. After 2 months of strengthening, conditioning and mma training, finally the long much awaited event come to unfold .

The first fighter to come up the ring was Joachim "Kim" Milana competing at 120-129lbs weight class against a fighter from Cebu. This was Kim's debut mma fight.

The first round started immediately with a powerful inside leg kick by the fighter from Davao
which accidentally missed its main target and hit the groin of his opponent. The next few minutes was a barrage of leg kicks by "Kim." This was responded by the fighter from Cebu with kicks of his own. Sudden turn events came when Kim threw a low leg kick which partially hit the knee joint of his opponent. Kim slipped thereafter, and provided a window of opportunity for his opponent to take advantage of the situation by taking Kim down and started pounding Kim. For the first few seconds Kim was almost able to submit his opponent with several submission attempts from the guard. Did a triangle, an ankle lock and the de Souza defense. Apparently the fight ended with a referee stoppage after several seconds of ground and pound.

The second fighter from Davao was pitted with also a fighter from Cebu who had an unblemished 5 or 6 URCC fights. His opponent seemed bigger than him but it was all decided inside the ring.
Initially it was a slug fest for both fighters. Lumacad a former Pro boxer who evolved to a mixed martial artist clipped his opponent with a heavy overhand. However, his competitor was not a pushover as he absorb the blow and recomposed himself and went for a take down.
As the fight progressed it went to the ground as both were entangled to each other trying to whoever gains control. Lumacad got his adversary with a guillotine choke however, his opponenet was able to escape and did his own attempt. For the second time the fight was reset and went to a stand-up slug fest. Lumacad got the upper hand as he gave a barrage of punches to his opponent never allowing his opponent to the ground.
Nonetheless, the fighter from Cebu went for a take down which allowed Lumacad to use again his signature move, the guillotine Choke. This time Lumacad never let go and went for a text book step by step execution of the submission stratagem which prompted his tough adversary to tap out or pass out. Lumacad got the win on the first round of the fight.

The third fighter was Sid Cayon fighting for the 130-139lbs weight division. The fight went with
a sudden rage of Cayon rushing to the center. This move apparently was the beginning of the end for this courageous fighter from Davao as he was clipped with a right straight by his opponent from Cagayan de Oro. Cayon dropped to the floor still dizzy trying to establish his ground, his adversary took advantage by immediately going for the Rear Naked Choke. Cayon still though at a very difficult and tight situation still retaliated with a flurry of punches focusing at his opponents head.
However, these punches were not enough as the fighter from CDO held on at his back and slowly tightening his unbreakable grip. The warrior from Davao never tapped out and still continued to struggle looking for ways to escape the anaconda like clutches of his opponent. The fight ended as Cayon lost consciousness due to RNC and the fighter from CDO's hands were raised as the winner of that match. The atmosphere of the event suddenly changed a everyone turned silent and was concerned about the fighters status. Even the so-called physician of the event panicked and ranted. The paramedics did not even know what to do, as for us practitioners we went in to our unconscious fighter turned him supine ( as he was left there on a prone position), Lumacad held Cayon's head and took the mouth guard to help his breathing. In a few minutes he was up and and ready to fight for another day.
It was a great experience for the fighters to learn from this event. For them to determine their skills level and learn where they can grow more, mature more and know which area they should work on.
Congratulations to the Organizers, team Butuan a successful event indeed. The Event ended up with a Big bang as the band played great songs and the fighters, coaches, fans, organizers mingled, socialized and celebrated!!! Till the next event!

Mark Munoz at 123..PINOY PRIDE

MMA Davao: Before anything else, in behalf of all the MMA fans, enthusiasts, practitioners here in Davao City, Philippines and members of MMA Davao FB group, CONGRATULATIONS!!!

MMA DAVAO: How do you feel right now after the long months training and after a great fight?

Mark Munoz: I feel a little sore. My foot and my hand is sore along with my forehead because of the head butt that happened in the fight that has 10 stitches in it.

MMA DAVAO: How was your training, how did you mix it up since both of you have the same wrestling background? did it pay off during the fight?

Mark Munoz: I had one of my best training camps. I worked very hard on my Muay Thai and made it a priority to work on it everyday. In the fight I utilized my kicks a lot and I felt that he wasn't prepared for that. I knew that we were going to cancel each other's wrestling out so I had to concentrate on my standup.

MMA DAVAO: Talking about your opponent, Do you have a specific game plan for him?

Mark Munoz: Yes, to always move in every situation and utilize my Muay Thai that I've been working so hard on.

MMA DAVAO: Any comments about your opponent?

Mark Munoz: Aaron is like a brother to me. It was very difficult to fight him, however this is what we do. I love the guy!!

MMA DAVAO: We were not able to watch the fight here, Can you walk us thru this? What happened and how did you get your opponent?

Mark Munoz: The fight was very action packed. Lots of striking done on our feet. I pressed the issue most of the time. When there were takedowns, we both stood up right away and escape and started to strike again. I threw a lot of leg kicks. There were clinches against the cage and lots of knees thrown. All in all, very action-packed and entertaining fight.

MMA DAVAO: Give us your thoughts about the fight?

Mark Munoz: I felt like I pushed the pace the whole time and that my conditioning was very good, however I still have to work on my striking and make sure I use good technique and not throw so many power punches. Use my jab a lot more and be comfortable with staying in the pocket.

MMA DAVAO: What were your thoughts when the fight ended?

Mark Munoz: When the fight ended and we were going into decision, I thought to myself, "I gave it my best and trust that whatever the decision is that God is in control and that He would take care of my career!"

MMA DAVAO: How is your relationship with Aaron Simpson now, did it change?

Mark Munoz: Our relationship is stronger! We have more respect for each other and still consider each other great friends.

MMA DAVAO: Given this experience, would you fight somebody whom you know and train with, for example Big Nog or Jr dos Santos,etc..?

Mark Munoz: With this experience it would be very hard to fight someone that I know. If I had the choice of fighting my friend I wouldn't do it. But I didn't have a choice and had to fight. Neither Aaron or I had the luxury of not accepting the fight.

MMA DAVAO: Congratulations to you and am so proud that you gave glory to God and to the Lord Jesus. More power to you and to Team Munoz, hope to see you guys soon

Mark Munoz: Maraming salamat po sa interview! Mabuhay, po! Ingat kayo po!!

OVERTRAINING?

The Warning Signs of Overtraining

Listed below are the warning signs of overtraining:

In the Muscles:

Persistent soreness and stiffness in the muscles, joints and tendons.
Heavy - leggedness.

Emotional Symptoms:
Loss of interest in training.
Nervousness - a heightened state Depression - humour is lacking A "I don't care" attitude.
Inability to relax - linked to nervousness
A drop in academic or work performance
- inability to focus Body Warning Signs
- body does not feel the same
Headaches - an increase in headaches

Overtraining is not reserved for the experienced and long-term trainer, the newbie can also fall into the 'overtraining zone'. These symptoms however are often shown via injuries and sickness and is not considered chronic whereas the more over zealous experienced runner who will tend to ignore the signs and fall flat bang in the middle of this 'zone'. It is not a pretty picture to deal with an athlete who has overtrained.

The mental strength of a seasoned runner can often be the number one detrimental factor in creating a more serious situation that arises from overtraining.
It is on these occasions that the use of a heart rate monitor comes into its own .The newbie athlete is often training too much for their "out of shape" body to adequately adapt to the new levels of stress. They become injured or fatigued, and often quit training completely. Veteran athletes who overtrain are frequently injured, and are always "flogging the horse ." The result - a drop in performance.

Test Yourself
One of the best, time tested procedures to test for overtraining is to take your resting morning pulse rate. The test is very simple to take. When you first wake-up in the morning, take your pulse for 15 seconds and times by four. If your pulse is higher than seven beats per minute faster than normal, you need to be aware of this elervated pulse and consider reducing your training load or even taking the day off training. If you have a coach, discuss this with them so that you are able to avoid the pitfalls of overtraining.

WINNER VERSUS LOSERS

The Winner is always part of the answer;
The Loser is always part of the problem.

The Winner always has a program;
The Loser always has an excuse.

The Winner says, "Let me do it for you";
The Loser says, "That is not my job."

The Winner sees an answer for every problem;
The Loser sees a problem for every answer.

The Winner says, "It may be difficult but it is possible";
The Loser says, "It may be possible but it is too difficult."

When a Winner makes a mistake, he says, "I was wrong";
When a Loser makes a mistake, he says, "It wasn't my fault."

A Winner makes commitments;
A Loser makes promises.

Winners have dreams;
Losers have schemes.

Winners say, "I must do something";
Losers say, "Something must be done."

Winners are a part of the team;
Losers are apart from the team.

Winners see the gain;
Losers see the pain.

Winners see possibilities;
Losers see problems.

Winners believe in win-win;
Losers believe for them to win someone has to lose.

Winners see the potential;
Losers see the past.

Winners are like a thermostat;
Losers are like thermometers.

Winners choose what they say;
Losers say what they choose.

Winners use hard arguments but soft words;
Losers use soft arguments but hard words.

Winners stand firm on values but compromise on petty things;
Losers stand firm on petty things but compromise on values.

Winners follow the philosophy of empathy: "Don't do to others what you would not want them to do to you"; Losers follow the philosophy, "Do it to others before they do it to you."

Winners make it happen;
Losers let it happen.

Winners plan and prepare to win.
The key word is preparat ion.

With pride and humility, I am offering the victory .. to my bro and coach Bryan Grandeza who prepared me for the fight, my besfriend coach Edgar Alan Paulino who was there with me through Thick and Thin.. My Mom Cynthia and my sister Angel for the love and support. My Son Ice the source of my strength. My Grandfather and the person who brought Moo Duk Kwan In the Philippines who started it all .. Grandmaster Casimiro 'Chingi" Grandeza ...and finally my Inspiration who took care of everything when I was away, Belle.... Thank you and I love you..

MMA DAVAO: for the sake of our readers, what organization sanctioned the event and what weight category did you compete on?
Steve Sur Grandeza: The Fight was under The World Kickboxing Federation (WKBF) . I fought in the Superwelterweight 146LBS.K1.

MMA DAVAO: Was this the same as K1 of Japan?
Steve Sur Grandeza: The Rules are the same. But under the WKBF sanctioning body. Simply like in Boxing we have WBC, WBO, IBF etc. However, most of the K1 Type of Competition originated in Japan. Moreso, there are fighters who are WKBF World Champions fighting in K1 Grand Prix like my upcoming opponent Najmeddin "The Scorpion" Al Haddad, who himself a Grand Prix K1 Champion.

MMA DAVAO: How do you feel right now after the long months training and after great fight?
Steve Sur Grandeza: I am very happy at least the sacrifices really paid of. But it is all for the glory of God.

MMA DAVAO: How was your training and did it pay off during your fight?
Steve Sur Grandeza: Yes the training was rigorous under the supervision of my coaches - my brother Bryan Grandeza , my besfriend Edgar Alan Paulino and my Instructor & father Master Edgardo Grandeza. The Game plan was executed as planned.

MMA DAVAO: Any comments about your opponent?
Steve Sur Grandeza: The opponent was a very humble and nice guy from Ghanna. My high respect to him.

MMA DAVAO: Talking about your opponent, Do you have a specific game plan for him?
Steve Sur Grandeza: We prepared a game plan for him . We executed everything well. Though adjustments were made during the actual fight.

MMA DAVAO: We were not able to watch the fight here, or read about it, Can you walk us thru this? What happened and how did you get your opponent?
Steve Sur Grandeza:

In the first round I was able to hit him with a jumping side kick and later knocked him down with a roundhouse kick .

In the second round , he was hit by an upper count which knocked him down again.
He was given mandatory count in the 3rd and fourth round. In the later round he was dazed by combinations enroute to the victory.

MMA DAVAO: Give us your thoughts about the fight?
Steve Sur Grandeza: The fight was a good fight. What was good was we both showed the essence of Martial Arts which is Courtesy and Discipline.

MMA DAVAO: What were your thoughts when the fight ended?
Steve Sur Grandeza: I just thank the Lord for sending me the Holy Spirit and giving me the things that I need to perform well and be protected during the fight.

Steve Sur Grandeza: The fight will be this December against the WKBF K1 Champion Najmenddin "The Scorpion" Al Haddad who went up the ring after the fight who challenged me to fight him. Henceforth, the KO promotion and the WKBF scheduled the fight.

MMA DAVAO: This somewhat a controversial question but I have to ask it anyways due to popular demand. Is there a possibility in the near future that you would try to compete in MMA? :)
Steve Sur Grandeza: Will see.... Thank you

MMA DAVAO: Do you want to say anything to the fans, readers and supporters of MMA DAVAO who loves martial arts?
Steve Sur Grandeza: Thank you so much. Let's propagate the true essence of Martial Arts The perfection of ones character with the 3D's... Dedication, determination and Discipline... we will surely succeed and exceed expectation....

5th Mindanao Grappling

5th BJJ/Grappling Mindnao Open Tournament

Sept. 18, 2010 SM Davao

Better late than never, September, like August, is one of the busiest month that we had. Last September 18, 2010 the 5th BJJ/Grappling Mindanao Open was held at SM Event Center at Davao City. It had a wide attendance from different teams, some old ones and couple of new teams mostly coming from CDO. It was a whole day experience with both GI and No GI events.

Participating Teams :

Grecia Fight Club (CDO), Askal Hybrid Balintawak (CDO), Kidapawan Grapplers, Star Bods Gym, Holidayspa & Gym, Warrior BJJ, Smashville Fitness Center, Deftac Davao, Beefit Gym Python’s Pit, Mats Judo Club, Aikicom Jukado, Metrolifestyle, Edge MMA, Cenojas MMA, Osmena Elem. School, Lion's Pride.

IT is an action packed event with promising grapplers. Indeed it was a good venue where the BJJ practitioners/grapplers can test, hone and show their skills. It also one way of giving awareness to the people what grappling is all about. Kudos to the organizers, CMMA, for hosting this event.

Enjoy the Photos….

And who won if you might ask...well since there were tons of categories, there were also a ton of winners. To get the list of winners you may contact Mr. Mars Cenojas of CMMA for the official result.
